How We Discovered The SEO Scam?

In the competitive landscape of local businesses, standing out online can feel like an uphill battle.

Many of my clients struggled to rank in search results despite offering top-notch services in their industries.

I decided to investigate why these high-calibre businesses weren't getting the visibility they deserved.

It turned out the main reason was that their SEO agencies were not performing as they had promised.

This challenge led me to establish an SEO agency focused on on-page optimisation and link building, but soon, I faced a problem…

I serviced a few clients, then a few more, and before I knew it, I had a decent number of local clients.

Sounds good, I know, but as we scaled, I ran into a few moral dilemmas.

Dilemma One:

The first thing I noticed was that getting my clients to the top of Google for their desired keyword was not really getting them much in the way of business.

I looked at Google and quickly realised that keywords with plenty of commercial search had a few immovable obstacles in their way.

Right there at the top of Google for all these search terms were:

  • Google Guaranteed
  • Google Paid Ads
  • A Find Results On Banner
  • And Google Business Profiles

Then, after you scroll and scroll some more, my client sitting in position one was where position eight used to be on the first page of Google.

In other words getting hardly any of the traffic.

Don’t get me wrong, the ranking will get you traffic, and in some cases, people scroll past all the ads and crap, but it generates nowhere near as much as you deserve after spending months and a lot of money getting there.

If this wasn’t bad enough, it wasn’t long until I encountered a much worse problem.

Dilemma Two:

I started getting more clients who asked me to help them with their SEO, which sounds great, but these clients were in the same industry and location as some of my other clients.

I informed them that, unfortunately, there was a conflict of interest and therefore I couldn’t do their SEO in good conscience.

This happened to me repeatedly. In one location, four different businesses all wanted me to help them with the exact same keywords.

This started to become frustrating, so I contacted a friend who has been in the SEO niche for many years and explained my problem to him.

He laughed and said "Service them both. No one will ever know."

Shocked, I proclaimed I couldn’t do that because how could they all win?

I decided to do some research and ask around to see how others were handling this huge problem I had encountered in SEO.

Let me prepare you for the answers I got because it was shocking.

I spoke to 15 people who own SEO agencies or offer SEO to clients, and only one said he just walks away from a new client when he already has a client in the same niche and location.

14 out of the 15 people/agencies I spoke to all told me the exact same thing:

"WORK FOR BOTH CLIENTS NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW!"

I had to return to the drawing board because the easy option wasn’t an option. In fact it felt like it should be illegal.

So, I decided to explore ethical workarounds and see if there was a legitimate way to help each client succeed without compromising on integrity.

Ranking first for high-traffic commercial terms doesn’t attract much business because everything else shows up on the first page of Google before you.

Traditional SEO doesn’t cut it.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that using a typical SEO agency that works with multiple clients in your niche and location is a waste of time.

We looked at the internet and quickly realised that in every local area, there is not just one high-traffic location, even though every local business and SEO agency concentrates their efforts there.

Most local businesses’ target area is not a location but a radius around their business.

Firstly, there are keyword location searches for every village, town and location within your business target radius.

This means people are actually targeting hyper local online and not just looking at the major city.

We tested this in Manchester and found that for our keyword, there are 3000 searches online every month, and over 200 businesses are within a 4-mile radius of Manchester.

We then took that same 4-mile radius and wrote down every town, village, and searchable location within that radius.

We did the same test and found that there were over 18000 searches for our target keyword in the Manchester area that almost no one else was targeting.

That’s right, six times the traffic and we weren’t finished there.

We also started looking at those 200 businesses within our target radius to see how many people actually searched the business brand names online and we were shocked.

Those 200 businesses between them received over 10000 searches a month online for their direct business brands.

This is 10000 additional searches online every single month that, in most cases, only one other business was ranking for.

You heard me right. In most cases, second place on the first page of Google was the worst-case scenario.
